Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
Arthur Broome was a founder of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the UK who later spent time in prison for his debts: “Broome, Arthur MacLoughlin [Arthur Eugenius] (1779–1837)”, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004).
Lily Loat was an influential anti-vaccination activist (longtime secretary of the National Anti-Vaccination League), alternative medicine advocate, and opposer of vivisection (not an uncommon trifecta): “Loat, Lily (1879/80–1958)”, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004).
Emily Williamson founded a local group in the UK to encourage women not to wear bird plumage in their clothing, which grew to become the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, one of the world’s largest conservation organizations: “Williamson, Emily (1855–1936)”, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004).
